Liberty Bell 7
A little history for those of you who do not know about this space capsule. Gus Grissom piloted the Liberty Bell 7, America's second manned space flight, in July 1961. After he splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean, the hatch blew off unexpectedly, and the capsule began to sink. There has been much controversy over how this happened, and many people thought Grissom panicked and intentionally blew the hatch. The capsule filled with water and sank before it could be recovered by helicopter. He always denied that he was responsible and said it was a mechanical malfunction. In 1999, an expedition was launched to search for and, if found, recover the capsule. There was a Discovery Channel crew on board to document this, and a website where they would post their daily progress. I have always been intrigued with the space program, and I followed this from start to finish, including the restoration at the Kansas Cosmosphere. When we moved down here to Texas, I saw that the capsule was on a traveling display, it would be at the Johnson Space Center for a few weeks, and I just had to go see it. As a side note, the display they had this in was horrible. It was completely dark with only a few dim lights, and you could hardly see a thing. When I got home and looked at the pictures I took with a flash, I could see much more than I could when I was there.
